Lean Manufacturing refers to the use of systematic methods to reduce costs by eliminating wastes and non-value added activities, while delivering what the customer wants on time every time.

Even though lean doesn't specifically target environmental outcomes, it can yield substantial environmental benefits.  By enabling a continuous improvement program that focuses on environmental wastes and pollution,  organizations can realize dramatic gains in productivity and while minimizing environmental impact.

In today’s competitive business environment, saving energy, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact are more than just buzz words; they are vital to the success of every organization. Unfortunately, many organizations fail to address these issues due to lack the in-house expertise or unawareness.  To make matters worse, Environmental Concerns and Energy Consumption are often downplayed, or even absent from most process improvement activities.

In an effort to enable and implement the latest energy efficiency, pollution prevention and productivity measures, Summit Business Solutions has launched it's Lean & Green Initiative. Through a series of intense workshops and detailed facility audits, organizations can gain knowledge and implement actions that help the environment while reducing cost.

we have been able to secure funds from the US Department of Energy for various clients to provide no-charge audits that since its inception helped over 5000 organizations save more than $500 million.

More and more our clients are finding that it pays to encourage process improvement teams to focus on green issues to help uncover costs that are otherwise hidden from operations and finance.

How It Works

The Lean & Green Initiative is a three phased approach to Environmental Sustainability

Phase 1
Environmental & Energy Consumption Awareness

Your staff is immersed in action oriented awareness building workshops that will provide a common understanding of improvement opportunities, tools for assessing current state and strategies for continual improvement.  These workshops are each 4-hours in duration and scheduled on a weekly basis to allow for execution of activities.  Workshops include the following:

  • Improving Energy Utilization through Lean
  • Minimizing Environmental Impact
  • The Lean & Green Value Stream
  • Green Kaizen
  • Environmental and Energy Measures
  • Implementing Solutions

Phase 2
Energy and Environmental Assessment

Following the awareness phase, we invite key members of you staff shadow our experts in a series of Energy and Environmental  audits where we identify cost savings opportunities, environmental impacts and develop action plans.  Together we will examine
  • Utility bills
  • Facilities
  • Equipment
  • Processes
  • Waste streams

You will learn how to use Value Stream Mapping for the purpose of observing energy and environmental areas.  Our experts will conclude this phase with the preparation of an easy to read, report that documents findings and provides recommendations.

Phase 3
Measuring, Monitoring and Sustaining

You will implement specific tools and establish systematic reporting structures to ensure an environmentally sound and energy efficient facility is maintained and continually improved.

Additionally as a member of our Lean & Green Initiative you will receive constant support, updates and benchmark data to ensure your efforts are ongoing and effective.
