Want to be a More Effective Leader?
Try This

Great leaders get people to Want to do what they Want them to do.  Would you like to get people to follow your directions more often?  Put the following two tasks into practice and start seeing results.

TASK 1
Getting your way and being a great leader is all about how you treat your people. This is a critical component to successful change management. We often see so many change management initiatives fail because some simple steps weren't followed. Implement these four human relations principles when you want cooperation and you will see a dramatic change in the way your people react.

  1. Once you've laid out your vision, include everyone that works for you in strategy planning to identity targets, develop objectives and define roles
  2. Clearly define limits, make sure everyone is absolutely certain what the budget is, how many people, how long, etc.
  3. Make them responsible for their own destiny
  4. At the end of it all don't forget to say Thank You

TASK 2
Great leaders are highly effective communicators. If you want to be a better communicator practice delivering important presentations in a two-minute window. This is often called the elevator speech; you need to sell a top executive on an idea and the only time you had available was a two minute elevator ride.
  1. Immediately get them in the scenario; this will create familiarity and engage your audience. Do this by referring to a specific instance, time, place, scenario, etc., something that draws your listener right into the moment. This is your opening sentence. Never go more than two sentences as they will start losing interest.
  2. Once they are engaged get right to the point - what your summary, sales pitch, topic, etc. is all about. Don't go off on tangents, stay focused and to the point. Take no longer than 1-1/2 minutes to do this.
  3. Close with a call to action; what do you want them to do and explain why they should do it. Define the specific action you would like and what the benefit to your listener would be. Do this in 30 seconds or less.
You will have to practice this over and over before it's perfected. Try practicing with colleagues. At first you may let them know what you're doing and ask for feedback, did they get the point, were you clear. Soon you will see just how much can be said in a two minute elevator speech.
